Al Sufouh hotels and the beach: private or shuttle?

No hotel in Al Sufouh on this page has a private beach of its own, so the honest answer to this search is a shuttle or a short ride. The First Collection Marina, the one hotel here sold on beach access, sits inland near Dubai Internet City and runs guest shuttles to JBR Beach and Riva Beach Club on the Palm. Grand Plaza Mövenpick Media City and Staybridge Suites Dubai Internet City are business-district hotels with pools, not sea views. If waking up on the sand is the point of your trip, look at the Palm or JBR instead. If you want a quieter base with the tram at the door and a beach day by shuttle, Al Sufouh works well.

Al Sufouh is Dubai's business and campus belt between Al Barsha and Dubai Marina: Internet City, Media City, Knowledge Village and Dubai College on one side of Sheikh Zayed Road, low villa streets and a short public beach on the other. It is calm at night and practical by day, with the tram and the red metro line both within reach.

Al Sufouh

Reaching the sea from Al Sufouh

Al Sufouh is the strip between Sheikh Zayed Road and the sea where Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City and Knowledge Village sit. Its seafront is mostly private land and villa plots, so its hotels face offices and the motorway, and the beach is something you travel to.

The First Collection Marina, a Tribute Portfolio hotel, has the biggest following of any hotel in this district on our list: 12,623 reviews and an 8.7 score. Its own pool is on the roof, and its booking listings describe complimentary shuttles to JBR Beach and to Riva Beach Club on Palm West Beach, booked in advance, leaving in the morning and returning late afternoon, with no service on Saturdays. JBR is a free public beach; Riva charges for access. That makes it a hotel with beach days, not a beach hotel.

Al Sufouh Beach, also called Black Palace Beach, is the district's own stretch of public sand, facing the Palm with the Burj Al Arab on the horizon. It has no restaurants, toilets or changing cabins, and its access has changed over the years: a Bayut guide reported it closed to the public until further notice, while other visitor guides describe it open with occasional maintenance. Its sandy access path starts from Al Sufouh Road near Dubai College. Treat it as a bonus for an early swim, never as the reason to book here, and take water with you.

The Dubai Tram runs along Al Sufouh Road with stops at Al Sufouh, Knowledge Village, Media City and Palm Jumeirah, where it connects with the Palm Monorail, before continuing to Dubai Marina and JBR. Al Sufouh is the end of the line, and the stations are air-conditioned, which matters in summer. From an Al Sufouh hotel, that line is how you reach the JBR sand without a taxi. Grand Plaza Mövenpick Media City, rated 9.2 from 2,746 reviews, is roughly 2.3 kilometres from Al Sufouh Beach by road, close to Media City.

Staybridge Suites Dubai Internet City, rated 9.1 from 830 reviews, is on Sheikh Zayed Road with studios and one or two-bedroom suites, many with balconies. The red metro line runs along that same road beside Internet City, which helps for Downtown and the airport. It suits a long stay or a family that cooks, but every beach plan starts with crossing the motorway corridor. The district is busiest on weekday mornings, when Internet City and Media City staff arrive; Saturday and Sunday, the Dubai weekend since 2022, are the easiest days to move around it.

A traveler's take

I would book Al Sufouh for a work trip that ends with a few beach afternoons, not for a beach holiday. The First Collection Marina is my pick because its shuttles do the job a private beach would do elsewhere, and JBR Beach is free and lively. Grand Plaza Mövenpick Media City suits someone who wants a spa and a quiet evening after meetings in Media City. If the sea is the whole point of your stay, I would skip this district and sleep on Palm West Beach or at JBR, where you walk out of the lobby onto the sand.

Local tips

  1. 1Book The First Collection Marina beach shuttle the day before: seats are reserved in advance, the return runs first come first served, and there is no service on Saturdays.
  2. 2Riva Beach Club on the Palm charges for access even when the shuttle is free; JBR Beach is public, so pick JBR if you only want to swim.
  3. 3Take the Dubai Tram from Al Sufouh, Knowledge Village or Media City stop to the JBR stops: it is the easiest way to the sand without a taxi.
  4. 4Al Sufouh Beach has no toilets, cabins or cafés; go early in the morning with water, and expect its access to change without warning.
  5. 5From June to September, go to JBR before 9 am or after 5 pm: the sand is too hot at midday and the walk from the tram stop feels long.
  6. 6Wear a cover-up on the tram and in Marina Mall after the beach: swimwear is for the beach and the pool only in Dubai.
